your website needs an oil change


Hi Reader!

So… I need to tell you about someone in my networking group.

She rebranded her business. New services, new photos, fresh website. Then she moved to a new suite in the same building and updated her Google Business Profile with the new address.

But forgot to update her website.

A client showed up at the wrong door.

Not a disaster. But one of those moments where you realize how easy it is for things to slip through the cracks when you're not actively thinking about your website.

Here's the thing.

Your website is open at 2am when someone searches for what you do. It's there on weekends when potential clients are doing their research. It works when you're with clients, on vacation, just living your life.

But it needs a little attention every now and then to make sure it's still telling the right story.

I call it the 10-minute oil change. (Yes, I know. Clinical but absolutely true.)

You get your car's oil changed every few months. Your website needs the same thing. Not a redesign. Not a huge overhaul. Just a quick check (four times a year) to make sure everything's still running right.

Here's what to look at:

  1. Contact info. Does it match your Google Business Profile exactly? Suite number and all?
  2. Services. Are you still offering everything that's listed — or have things shifted?
  3. Photos. Current, or from two years ago?
  4. Testimonials. Any recent wins you haven't added yet?
  5. Time-sensitive content. Any outdated dates or seasonal references hiding in there?
  6. Links. Anything broken?

That's it. Six things. Ten minutes.

Tie it to the seasons. Or literally put it on the calendar for the same week you get your oil changed. (Seriously...that's the habit that actually sticks.)

This week, do this: Pull up your website right now and check just ONE thing on that list. Just one. That's how the habit starts.
