I have been seeing so many posts in Facebook groups lately.

Small business owners trying to use AI to build their website, getting stuck, and wondering what they are doing wrong. And I want to talk about it, because I don't think they are doing anything wrong at all. I think they are just running into the reality of what AI can and can't do right now.

Here's the thing.

AI can absolutely generate a website mockup. A layout, a headline, soft colors, a button, services cards. And when you see it for the first time, it feels a little like magic.

But there is a big difference between a website that exists and a website that works.

I tried to build a three-page site with AI recently. Full brand strategy document, design assets, clear direction. Here is what actually happened:

• The homepage alone took nine to ten hours.
• Every change required a new prompt. Logo too small. Prompt. Still too small. Prompt. Too big. In WordPress that is one click.
• Getting images in meant pushing to Netlify, creating individual image URLs, and manually telling AI where everything should go.
• I kept running out of tokens and had to stop and wait.

And after all of that? It still needed more work.

A prototype is not a finished website. A pretty page is not a conversion path. Your website needs to help someone make a decision — and AI does not know your business, your offer, or what is missing from your messaging well enough to do that for you. Not yet.

P.S. AI can give you a website. It cannot notice that your messaging doesn't match your offer or that your brand personality isn't coming through. That part is still very human.
