Hey Reader!! I recently worked with a business that's been around for 85 years, and their website was working against them. Their work was exceptional. Their reputation was solid. Clients loved them. But when potential clients landed on their website, there was this disconnect. The biggest issue? The website didn't match the luxury level of service they actually provided. They were serving high end clients with beautiful, sophisticated work. But their website looked dated and didn't reflect that quality at all. And it was hard for their team to update. Every time they finished a gorgeous new project, they wanted to showcase it on their website. But adding new photos and project details was so difficult that updates just didn't happen. Here's what I hear from established businesses all the time.
I totally get it. When you've been in business for decades, you've built something meaningful. Your identity matters. Your history is valuable. But here's the truth. Technology moves faster than business cycles. What looked modern three years ago looks outdated now. And there's a real cost. First impressions happen in seconds. When someone lands on your website, they're making silent judgments about your quality immediately. If your website looks dated, they assume your service is too. If you serve a luxury market but your website doesn't reflect that, you're losing ideal clients to competitors whose sites match their pricing. When it's hard to update your own website, your portfolio gets stale. Potential clients can't see your best recent work. The good news? Modernizing doesn't mean abandoning your identity. Here are four ways to update while honoring your legacy. π Use your history as a strength Don't hide your years in business. Showcase them. Add a timeline. Put "Serving clients for 50+ years" prominently on your homepage. Your longevity is built in credibility. π Keep your signature elements For my client, we kept their bright red logo color that they're known for. We just updated everything else around it. What makes you recognizable can stay, while the rest gets modernized. π Make it easy to update Create systems that let you add new projects, photos, and testimonials yourself without needing to call someone every time. Your website should be a tool that works for you, not another task that gets put off. π Match your market If you serve luxury clients, your website needs to reflect that level of sophistication. Clean design. Professional photography. Elevated messaging. The visual quality should match your actual work quality. The goal isn't to change who you are. It's to present who you are more effectively. Try this week. Look at your website on your phone. Compare it to 2-3 competitors. Be honest, does the design quality match the quality of your actual work? If you hesitated, it's time for an update. And you don't need to start from scratch. Small improvements make a big difference. Want the full behind the scenes breakdown? You've got this, P.S. Curious to see what a new website design project might look like for you? Every week you will get one (yup, just 1!) email from me, like friends chatting over coffee, that contain different website + marketing tips, updates in the industry and the occasional update on what's happening in my life. I canβt wait to get to know you better this way! β‘
Hey Reader!! I hosted website strategy sessions a few weeks and found myself seeing the same pattern repeated. Successful business owners. Professional websites. But something felt off. Their sites were talking about the business they had three years ago, not the one they're running today! One action coach had a gorgeous site geared mostly about coaching. But coaching wasn't her main thing anymore. She'd discovered she loved creating community experiences, hosting events, leading women's...
Hey Reader!!I'm sitting here hardly believing I'm about to type this... this week marks the 100th episode of Website Design Made Simple! But before I celebrate, I want to share the vulnerable truth about how this all started. 100 episodes ago, I was staring at an expensive camera on my desk, feeling a little bummed out. I'd bought it to make YouTube videos for my business, but every time I tried to record, I felt so uncomfortable. The pressure to look perfect, wear the right outfit, have...
Hey Reader!!I spend a lot of time analyzing websites, and I keep seeing the same pattern that's costing business owners serious money. They think they have to choose between a website that's beautiful OR one that actually gets found in Google searches. This either/or mindset is completely backwards, and here's why it's hurting your business. I see gorgeous websites that look like they belong in design museums. Perfect photography, stunning color palettes, elegant typography. But when I check...
