are you too smart for your own website?

Hey Reader!!
Can I share something I've been noticing with the incredibly smart business owners I work with?

There's so much talk about imposter syndrome in our world, but I'm seeing the complete opposite problem. What happens when you're SO qualified and knowledgeable that your website actually works against you?

I call it "expert overwhelm," and if you have multiple certifications, advanced degrees, or years of specialized training, you might be experiencing this without even realizing it.

Here's how expert overwhelm typically shows up on websites (see if any of this sounds familiar):

πŸ‘‰ You lead with credentials instead of client problems

Your homepage lists all your impressive qualifications, but visitors leave confused about what you actually do for them.

πŸ‘‰ You use industry jargon without realizing it

Terms that are second nature to you require a degree for others to understand. What feels professional to you feels intimidating to potential clients.

πŸ‘‰ You explain methodology before benefits

You focus on how you solve problems rather than what results clients will experience. The "how" comes before the "what" and "why."

πŸ‘‰ You try to share everything at once

Your expertise is vast, so you attempt to demonstrate all of it on your homepage, creating decision paralysis for visitors.

The result? People might think "This is really impressive, but I'm confused." You might see high bounce rates despite having incredibly valuable content, or experience long sales cycles because people don't understand what you offer.

Here's what I want you to try this week.

Look at your homepage with fresh eyes. Can someone explain what you do after viewing it for less than a minute? Are you talking about your credentials or their benefits?

Remember, being an expert is only an asset when people can understand it. Your knowledge should clarify how you help people, not complicate their decision to work with you.

The smartest thing you can do is simplify. Use your expertise to serve your potential clients, not to impress them.

Your website should make people think "Yes, this person can help me" not "Wow, they're smart, but I'm not sure if they're right for my situation."

Hey Reader!!I've been reflecting on this past year as I prep for my 100th podcast episode (can you believe it?!), and something really struck me. After auditing over 50 websites in 2025, I can tell you exactly what separates the websites that actually make money from the ones that just look pretty. It's not the trendy color palettes, perfect typography, or fancy features that everyone obsesses over. It's something completely invisible that most business owners don't even know exists. Most of...

Hey Reader!!I just finished a website audit that reminded me of something so many of us struggle with. We pour our hearts and souls writing amazing copy for our websites, explaining how we can help and then... crickets. Visitors just aren't converting. That's exactly what was happening with Anne from The Fun Reset. She had compelling messaging about her group coaching for ambitious women, but something wasn't right. All words, no breathing room, no visual connection. Here's what we discovered...

Hey Reader!!I had quite the experience at a networking event last week and I want to share it with you. I met this woman who absolutely radiated great, positive energy. Perfect for what some of my clients might need, we had such a good conversation. As we were wrapping up, she handed me her business card with this big smile and said, "Definitely check out my website!" So I went home that afternoon, pulled up her site, and within about 8 seconds...I kind of lost interest. It felt like a...
