your small business probably doesn’t need a blog

Helllo my friend!!!

Okay, I’m about to say something controversial in the website design world.

Your small business probably doesn’t need a blog.

I know, I know. Everyone tells you that you MUST have a blog to be successful online.

But here’s the truth in 2026. A neglected blog with three posts from 2020 is actually hurting your credibility, not helping it.

Here’s what changed

Back in the early 2010s, blogging was the main way to rank in Google. More content equaled more visibility.

But today? AI has changed everything. Google is smarter. It’s about quality over quantity now.

Plus, we aren’t clicking through to blog posts anymore. (Remember my episode last week about no click searches?) We’re getting answers from AI, which is reading those blog posts for us.

And I hear it from so many clients. They feel guilty. They think they should be blogging. It becomes a source of stress.

When blogging actually makes sense

You’re committed to SEO as a primary strategy. You understand it’s a 6 to 12 month investment before you see results.

You actually enjoy writing and teaching. It energizes you instead of draining you.

You have support systems in place. A content calendar, editing help, a promotional strategy beyond just hitting publish.

The real commitment

If you’re going to blog, here’s what it takes. At least two posts per month. Each post should be 1200 to 1500 words. With keyword research for each topic. Internal linking between posts and to your services pages.

That’s about 2 to 4 hours per post, plus keyword research, editing, optimization, and promotion.

That’s a big commitment.

What to do instead

If you can’t commit to that (and most of us can’t), here’s what you can do.

Optimize your main website pages. Pick keywords for your homepage, about page, services pages. That has more impact than random blog posts.

Write detailed case studies. Show client transformations with real results and imagery. These work as both portfolio pieces and SEO content.

Use video or podcast content. If speaking is easier than writing, record content and repurpose the transcript into blog posts.

Start an email newsletter. Build your list and have direct conversations with your audience. Less pressure than blogging.

If you have an abandoned blog

Remove it from your main navigation. Keep it in your footer so it’s still accessible but not front and center.

Decide if you want to revive it. If yes, create a content calendar and start by updating old posts.

If not, repurpose those old posts into case studies or podcast topics.

Here’s the thing

Blogging is one strategy, but it’s not the only strategy. You have permission to choose what works for you.

If you can’t commit to blogging consistently, your website can still be incredibly effective.

Focus your energy on strategies you can actually maintain.

Those photos triggered a complete refresh of everything. I placed them into my existing design. Same logo, same colors, same fonts. But the photos changed...
