your website should feel like your living room

Hey Reader!!

Picture this scenario. You walk into someone's home and it feels absolutely magical ... cozy lighting, beautiful colors, family photos everywhere, and those perfect throw pillows that make you want to curl up with a book. You immediately feel at home.

Then this same person gives you their business card. You check out their website later, and it's like walking into a sterile corporate office from the 1990s. Generic stock photos, robot copy, zero personality. You start thinking "Wait, is this the same person?"

I see this disconnect constantly, and it breaks my heart because your website should feel as welcoming and authentic as you are in person.

This hit me recently when I finished a website redesign for a small law firm. The transformation was incredible β€” we brought their actual personality to life online, and it got me thinking about how website design really is like interior design for your business soul.

Here are four ways to make your website feel more like YOU πŸ‘‰

πŸ‘‰ Treat your homepage like your front door

You have three seconds to make visitors feel welcome and want to explore further. Use authentic photos and copy that immediately communicates who you are.

πŸ‘‰ Make your about page feel like your living room

This should be conversational and cozy, not corporate and stuffy. Let your personality shine here because this is where people get to know the real you.

πŸ‘‰ Organize your services page like a well-designed office

Professional but approachable, with everything easy to find. No confusion about how you help or what it costs to work with you.

πŸ‘‰ Use testimonials like family photos on the wall

They tell stories and create emotional connections. Share specific results and transformations, not generic "she was great" quotes.

The key insight? Authenticity attracts better clients than trying to be what you think people want.

I spent years putting out what I thought a web design agency should look like. When I finally embraced who I really was and let that personality show online, I started connecting with clients who were actually looking to work with ME!

Your action step this week...Look at your website and ask "Does this feel like me?" Pick one small thing you can change to bring more authentic personality online.

Hey Reader!!Last month while working on two completely different websites I got to thinking about home page strategy. And how many of us might be getting that wrong. The first website was for a design-build firm specializing in luxury residential projects. The second was for Deb, a functional medicine provider who helps people increase their health span as they age. Completely different businesses, but they both came to me with the same challenge. How do you create a homepage that attracts...

Hey Reader!!Something's been on my mind since a coffee chat last month and I think you'll find this as eye-opening as I did. I met with someone whose website I'd actually discovered before we connected. It was built by a designer I follow and admire - absolutely gorgeous, creative, and the kind of site that makes you stop scrolling and think "wow." When I complimented her beautiful website and asked how it was working for her business, her response surprised me. She loves how it looks, but...

Hey Reader!!I just wrapped up a website audit that reminded me why I love these sessions so much. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come from the simplest fixes, and that's exactly what happened with Samia from Dragoness Rising. She'd created this really well-designed website that perfectly captured her brand personality. Her navigation was clear, her services were well organized, and everything looked professional and polished. But here's the thing ...all that great design work wasn't...
